Introduction to Directing Comedy

About the class

A 4-week class on directing dynamic comedy! How to make the most of your script, space, and performers, even with limited resources; how to play off of and subvert the audience's expectations; and how to communicate with your team. Each class will be a balance of lecture, discussion, and hands-on work, including directing your own short project at the end of the month. Led by Kristin McCarthy Parker (PuffsHold On To Your ButtsKEVIN!!!!!, and Kapow-i GoGo), this class is perfect for anyone with an interest in comedy wanting to direct more or hone their skill set (beginners welcome).

WEEK 1: TEXT: Critical techniques for reading and developing a text, brainstorming and researching your ideas, and fleshing out your approach as a director in the room.

WEEK 2: STAGING: Imaginative use of the space, highlighting comedic moments, and balancing the comedy with emotional resonance.

**Between weeks 2 and 3, we'll attend a show together**

WEEK 3: COMMUNICATION: Leading a rehearsal room, how to encourage ideas and creativity while maintaining a cohesive structure, and preparing you to direct a scene for Week 4.

**Between weeks 3 and 4, you'll rehearse a short scene to present in class**

WEEK 4: SHOWCASE: Presenting scenes to the group, providing each other with constructive feedback, and discussing ideas to put into practice on future projects.
