Step 1

Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone knows how to tell it.  In this class, you’ll learn how to transform your real-life experiences into unforgettable performance pieces that make audiences laugh and think. The class will operate workshop style, with the majority of class time devoted to sharing and critiquing stories. Each student will develop at least two stories and perform one in a class show at The PIT for family and friends.

Michelle and David have worked together since 2010, teaching storytelling to beginners, seasoned writers and performers, and corporate professionals. Michelle approaches storytelling as a writer/director, with a focus on story structure, while David approaches it as a writer/performer, with a focus on character work and physicality. Together, they’ve designed a multifaceted intro program for storytellers with different goals in mind.

MICHELLE WALSON is a writer, director, and producer with a passion for comedy. As a founding producer of the storytelling show RISK!, she’s developed stories with SNL’s Rachel Dratch, This American Life’s Starlee Kine, and insult comic Lisa Lampanelli, among others. Michelle was a contributing editor for Michael Showalter’s comedic memoir, Mr. Funny Pants. Most recently, she wrote and directed the short film, Chin Up, and was selected to lead a storytelling workshop at the 2012 Women in Comedy Festival in Boston.  Michelle holds a MFA in Film Production from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, a MS in Television Production from Boston University, and a BA in Creative Writing from Brown University.

DAVID CRABB is a performer, writer, director, and storyteller in New York City. He is a two-time MothSlam champion and co-producer of Kevin Allison’s RISK! He is also the co-creator/producer of the live storytelling series ASK ME. His one-person show, “Bad Kid” at Axis Theatre, was met with critical acclaim and selected as a Critics’ Pick by the New York Times. David has directed shows at The PIT and Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, has been a guest artist at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and received an interdisciplinary MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
