Sit back, relax and enjoy long-form improvisation based on a single suggestion. TONIGHT'S FRIEND:  Ali Farahnakian (30 Rock, Delocated, Louie, The PIT) Susan Messing, a NJ native and graduate of Northwestern University’s Theatre School, is an alumna of the iO, Second City’s Mainstage, and a founding member of Chicago’s infamous Annoyance Theatre. She is the creator of the Level two curriculum @ iO, and continues to teach at The Annoyance, Second City, and around the country. Susan is an adjunct instructor for DePaul University. Her standup act with her puppet, Jolly, was featured at the HBO/US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, and on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and NBC’s Late Fridays, and her most impressive bit movie role was as a bad stripper in a halo brace in Let’s Go to Prison! Susan has been an improviser and comedian for over twenty five. years. Chicago Magazine called her “Funniest Woman in Chicago,” Chicago Reader has named her “Best Improviser” and she is the recipient of The Chicago Improv Festival’s “Improviser of the Year.” You can see her fuck around every Thursday night in her critically-acclaimed show, Messing with a Friend, now in its 6th year at The Annoyance Theatre.

Patterns in Everything

June 21st (One-Day Workshop)

Being in your head has a terrible reputation in improv circles. This workshop is all about being in your head at the top of the scene (a good thing) and then using the information to truly play out of your head for the remainder. One exercise, one technique. Adding pattern recognition to your bag of improv tricks will help you find the comedy faster no matter the form.

Anatomy of a 1-Liner: Writing Monologue & Roast Jokes

June 25th (One-Night Workshop)

The "Anatomy of a 1-Liner: Writing Monologue and Roast Jokes" interactive seminar teaches students the various categories and structures of jokes used in monologues and roasts. Using this organized approach, students will participate in exercises that enable them to improve their current jokes and to write new ones from the latest daily newspaper.

Ever feel like you suffer from multiple personalities? Why not put them to work! In this character building class, you will learn how to cultivate fully developed and realistic characters through a blend of classic mask techniques & improvisational games. This class will not only make you a character connoisseur, but help you contextualize them for the stage, screen and even auditions.
