About the show
My piece that I am proposing is called “A Polish Host” and it is the story of my mother’s immigration from communist Poland to America. I focus a lot on the different cultures between Poland and America; specifically on how they treat guests and serve others because of the difference between collectivism and individualism. My goal for this show is to help people understand a different perspective and inspire them to be good hosts throughout their lives.
The story is: my mother grew up in rural communist Poland and wanted more in life than just to settle down and get married, so she learns French and wins a trip to France and meets a lot of people from Western countries there. They were all interested in life behind the Iron Curtain. My mother, being trained as a gracious host, invited all the people she met to Poland, and they actually followed through and came to Poland after the trip when my mom was already back in Poland. At the border, the government officials asked the Westerners where and who they were going to visit in Poland. When they all said my mother’s name, the Secret Police found my mother suspicious and invaded her privacy constantly because they thought she was a spy. After they had turned her life upside down, my mother got on a rare trip to America and somehow made it work in America. I want to inspire people to go on adventures and not be afraid of something new.
I will be acting as many different characters and narrating the story. The lights and sound are very minimal and all I need is a blank stage and a suitcase. There will be a lot of audience interaction and direct address.
