About the class
Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone knows how to tell it. In this class, you’ll learn how to transform your real-life experiences, thoughts, opinions into an unforgettable performance that will allow you to take the audience along on your journey. The class will operate workshop style, with the majority of class time devoted to sharing and critiquing stories.
The class will end with a show at The PIT for family and friends during the weekend of StoryFest!
*Students should come to the first class with the piece they want to work on – so they can get on their feet the very first class and get feedback.
Session 1 What Makes a Great Story? The course will open with a discussion on what makes for a good, compelling story. What are narrative elements and devices that hook people in? Students will come to the class already with a story in mind they want to work on. Each will be given a chance to perform their piece and get feedback from Harmon and the rest of the class. At the end of each session, everyone will be given a homework assignment of a solo storytelling show to watch on Netflix – which will be discussed at the start of each class. Classics storytelling shows from the likes Spalding Gray, John Leguizamo, John Leguizamo, Tig Notaro, etc…
Session 2 Technique, Technique, Technique Session 2 will open with a discussion on various storytelling techniques; the technical tricks of telling stories around a campfire and how to hook in your audience.
We’ll then give everyone a chance to perform and get feedback on the piece they are working on. Everyone will be given a homework assignment where they need to create a story based on something that happens to them that week – which they will share at the start of next session.
Session 3 Lets Add Some Multimedia Students will perform their homework assignments. Then we’ll break down into elements of adding multimedia to stories – to enhance the storytelling experience; from what type of software to use – to adding video, audio, music, and images to accompany the story.
Session 4 Going Solo We’ll talk about how to turn a singular story into an hour-long solo storytelling show to take to comedy and fringe festivals. What is needed in an overall story arc or b-story that enhances an hour-long solo show?
Session 5 Putting It All Together We’ll talk about how to produce a regular monthly storytelling series in New York. How do you find a room? What are some tips on promoting. Students will also get a chance to perform the story they’ve been work on throughout the course and get final feedback.
Session 6 Let’s Hear From the Panel We will have a panel with a few professional storytellers from around the NY circuit to answer storytelling questions and give advice/feedback on the NY storytelling scene.
