Each summer, we’re excited to offer week-long intensives in acting, improv, sketch, and stand-up! Spend a day in a comedy crash course or brush up your skills. Study from all of The PIT’s Award-Winning Improv Curriculum, as well as our Acting, Sketch, Stand-Up, and Elective Programming!

Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm OR 11am-5:30pm with a break for lunch each day.

In Level 1 Acting, students will dive into the beginning of your Acting training here at The PIT. You’ll begin by doing some character work, to create realistic and true characters onstage, leading into performing truthful monologues as a given character. As you’re given text to work with, your instructor will dive into some script analysis with you, to help you find your entry points as an actor into any piece you’re given. This will lead into portraying strong relationships onstage, and exploring the truths of the world of your characters.

This class will dive into how you can create characters using improv exercises to help pitch, write, and perform solo performance character pieces. Whether you are an improviser, writer or performer this workshop will add to your tool belt of using character acting to enhance your artistry in your work.

This class is for anyone who wishes to learn the strategies to present themselves to the industry as a professional actor, and the methods of reaching out and attracting an acting agent. In addition, we’ll also cover techniques to potentially secure a manager and go over the various ways you can build relationships with casting directors. Level 1 Improv | Outlaw

July 7-11 from 9 AM-12 PM

In this class you will use scene work and group exercises to explore the joy of improvisation, be more confident, trusting and graceful on stage. Learn  “Yes, and…!” until you have to say “No, thank you”. Focus on positive choices to initiate scenes, real-life and character monologues grounded in TRUTH! Students will perform The Armando for their grad show, giving improvised monologues and performing scenes based off said monologues!

***Grad Show will be held on Saturday, 7/12 at 6 PM in the PIT Loft***

Level 2 Improv | Duncan

July 14-18 from 9 AM-12 PM

PREREQUISITE: YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED LEVEL 1 IMPROV OR EQUIVALENT AT ANOTHER COMEDY THEATER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS CLASS. In the comment section of Checkout, please list when you took said classes and who your instructors were. If you fail to meet the prerequisites for this course and continue to register anyway, we will have to transfer you out and add the balance as class credit, to be used for other classes.

In level 2 you will continue to focus on strong listening and reacting without interrupting your scene partner. Making sure the beginning of your sentence doesn’t get in the way of the middle of theirs. You will reinforce saying “Yes, and…!” Until you have to say “no thank you”. You’ll also get a comprehensive understanding on how to edit your scenes as an improviser, in partnered and group scenes. 

Personal, truthful, monologues will also be part of the tool box that will benefit all aspects of life and performance. Editing will be introduced so performers know when it’s time to enter a scene and edit a scene with walk on’s and sweep edits.

Level 3 Improv | Alu

July 21-25 from 9 AM-12 PM

PREREQUISITE: YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED LEVEL 2 IMPROV TO QUALIFY FOR THIS CLASS. In the comment section of Checkout, please list when you took said classes and who your instructors were.

In level 3 you will continue to focus on strong listening and reacting without interrupting your scene partner. Making sure “the beginning of your sentence doesn’t get in the way of the middle of theirs”. You will reinforce saying “Yes, and…!” Until you have to say “no thank you”. You’ll learn about devices such as the Analogous or Time-Dash scenes, and work on the first, second, and third beats of scenes. Students will continue to focus on editing by following their gut and heart to edit scenes at the height. You’ll now begin working in 3+ person/group scenes!

Learn how to “heighten and tighten” a scene organically glued in reality to create “win-win” fun scenes to play to entertain yourself and others while “treating your partner like a genius”. You’ll also be introduced to the most widely-known Improv show format- The Harold! As a class you’ll work on performing this format of an Improv show for your Grad Show.

In level 4 you will continue working on The Harold. Further exploring the game of The Harold, you’ll explore further means of editing as you begin to grow your understanding of The Harold, deepening your knowledge and comfortability of the Game of the scene. You’ll also begin to be informed on other variations of form/game for Improv. As a class you’ll work on performing this format of an Improv show for your Grad Show.

The Basics of Sketch, students will develop the fundamental skills they need to start writing original comedy sketches. Build your sketch toolkit with the essentials – how to come up with a sketch idea, how to employ classic sketch structure, how to create memorable characters, how to clearly communicate your ideas to your audience.

Students will write multiple sketches during the course of this class, with PIT Teacher will guide them through every step of the process with positive, hands-on instruction.

In Sketch Writing Level 2: Building Your Packet, students will utilize the skills developed in “Sketch Writing Level 1” to write sketches in a series of classic formats. Mastering the modern sketch comedy standards – commercial parodies, character pieces, topical sketches, and many more – is the primary goal of this class, as students will begin to fine-tune and hone their personal sketch comedy voice.

By the end of this class, students will have written five original sketches, and will be well on their way to having a polished, professional sketch writing packet.

In Level 3 Sketch, you will learn…
– How to write for yourself
– How to write and perform character monologues
– How to act/perform in a sketch show
– Performing with comedic timing
– Write “desk pieces” akin to what can be seen on SNL’s Weekend Update
Students must come to the first class equipped with pitches or completed sketches. The second and third classes will focus on editing and producing drafts, to a final read-thru of what is selected for the grad show. The last three classes will be dedicated to the performance aspect of the class, all culminating in a final class grad sketch show.

There’s nothing more exhilarating than performing stand up comedy, it can be intimidating.  More of a guide than a conventional class, this goal-oriented program will get you up there doing stand up for the first time. You will come out of this class with disciplined writing tools, informative personal feedback and important advice, as you begin your stand up comedy journey. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced in other walks of comedy life, this class is for you. Class culminates in a stand-up show, where students present their first 3 minutes of material.
